Do I need any previous musical studies to be in band? No! There are only two common elements in a successful band student: hard work and a positive attitude. There is a place for everyone in the DMS band!
Can I be involved in band and other activities like athletics and other music classes at DMS? Yes, our band students are involved in a variety of other activities at DMS. We have band students who play football, basketball, baseball, cross country, tennis, art, and even CHOIR. At Duncanville Middle School, students are encouraged to be involved in many activities and try new things. Our schedule allows students to be in multiple fine arts programs like choir and band.
How will I choose the instrument I will play? At a designated time shortly after school begins,(date will be communicated well in advance) all Beginning Band students will have an opportunity to try every instrument. There will be qualified music teachers on hand to give the students a “mini-lesson” on each instrument and the chance to make a sound on that instrument. After trying all of the instruments the students have a chance to meet with the band director to make a final instrument decision based on student desire and projected potential.
Are there any after school requirements? Band actually meets every day during the regular school day, so we do not usually have any after school rehearsals. The only after school requirements are usually performances (concerts). Participation in concerts is required of every band student. All after school dates will be communicated well in advance.
How much does it cost? The primary cost for beginning band students and their parents is the rental/purchase of an instrument. While this can be expensive, many good options are available for parents. All of the local music stores have rent-to-own options and financing plans. Duncanville Band also offers a few instruments to rent from the school for a fee of $50 per semester; this is mainly for our larger instruments but there is some availability for every instrument. t is our goal to have an instrument in student’s hands to give them the opportunity for success! In addition to the instrument, there is a class fee of $25 for Beginning Band class. Because our band is active and growing (yay!) this class fee doesn't cover all of our operational costs. We host two primary fundraisers during the school year and ask our students to participate. If you would like to "opt out" of fundraising, we offer a $50 fair share fee.
